Infertility Q&A

What is infertility?

Infertility is when you’re unable to get pregnant or carry a pregnancy to term. Pregnancy requires many steps to occur, including ovulation, fertilization, and implantation. A problem in any of these processes can lead to infertility.

How common is infertility?

If you’re having trouble getting pregnant, you’re not alone. About 12% of women aged 15-44 experience difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant.

Coping with infertility can be stressful, but Dr. Lewis at Harmony Integrative Healthcare can help. She uses an integrative approach to help couples conceive. She welcomes LGBTQ+ couples and ensures that whoever is going to carry the baby is able to achieve and maintain a healthy pregnancy.

What causes infertility?

Infertility isn’t only a women’s health problem, although many conditions, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, can prevent a woman from getting pregnant. Problems with ovulation are a common cause of infertility in women.

About 35% of the time, infertility is due to an issue with both the man and woman trying to conceive. About 8% of the time, a male factor is the only cause. Possible causes of male infertility include problems with sperm motility or count. Sometimes, infertility occurs without a clear cause.

How is infertility treated?

First, Dr. Lewis thoroughly reviews your medical history and performs a physical and pelvic exam. She spends as much time as needed to explain your options for testing and treatment so you can make an informed decision.

Fertility testing may include lab tests to determine the cause of your infertility and the type of support you need. Dr. Lewis only orders necessary lab tests, such as checking your hormone levels, and can provide competitive cash pricing for people who don’t have insurance. Other tests may include a Pap test and sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening.

At Harmony Integrative Healthcare, Dr. Lewis offers a four-month fertility-focused program to help couples conceive naturally. She offers various integrative treatments such as acupuncture and nutritional supplements. Dr. Lewis also works with couples who want to use fertility treatments, such as:

  • In vitro fertilization (IVF)
  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  • Intracervical insemination (ICI)

If infertility is due to an underlying condition, such as PCOS, treatment may begin by addressing that issue.
